Hi, I'm Kim.
The voice in your head, and words on your screen.
My love affair with writing started during my A-levels, and forgive me while I age myself, back in 2002. Philosophy class, to be precise. The ability to shape perspectives and convey profound notions made my soul dance. Influencing unsuspecting readers and rearranging words to form values-based opinions, and guiding journeys made more sense to me than maths or physics (yes, I'm British, too), ever did.
Fast-forward to working at a Big Four. Life circumstances had caused me to halt my pursuit of a Masters in Psychology, and I was making big-to-me dollars doing admin work. But my cup was empty. The job wasn't fulfilling and so I sought projects from departments outside of my own, and stumbled upon the Marketing department. There, I was quickly voluntold to interview a budding Calgary-based entrepreneur and sell the company's story to the judges through written word. To my dismay, the application was selected as a finalist. I was stoked.
Writing took a bit of a back seat to the whims of life, but it never fully left me. I continued helping friends rewrite resumes and cover letters, and offering proofreading thumbs-ups on job applications in the hope of landing interviews. Many of them did.
And then I met him. The person who saw the value in my communications skills and jumped at the chance to use them towards his million endeavors. For those not in the know, I'm talking about my husband, Chris who was at the time running to become Chair of TAPS at WestJet. From speechwriting, communication strategy and advice, I became the ghost writer behind the person.
That experience became my diving board into the deep end of strategic communications, and I’ve been swimming ever since. Over the last decade, I’ve honed my skills as the voice behind the brand, strategically shaping content, communications and campaigns for employee leadership races and aligning messaging to business goals. I have written multiple winning applications for my 9-5's Best Managed Companies and Top Growth submissions. Most recently, I was the campaign manager and communications strategist for a winning municipal political campaign, and lead a 30-wide team to host an annual multicultural festival attended by 10,000 people.
If it involves words and planning 5-steps ahead, I'm in. My joy comes from tippy-tappying on my laptop, mapping out communication plans with sticky notes and plain walls, but most importantly, connecting with people who need help communicating. If that's you, then let's chat.
